THE rainforest to the sea
Lost In The Rainforest
Connection to place is vital to our sense of identity, both personal and communal. Bellingen born, I have always had a distinct connection to the rainforest and that particular landscape.
The concept of place refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a physical space. It is in the invisible weave of culture and in the tangible physical aspects of a place and the interpersonal aspects that we form our sense of place. This work encompass both history and memory and attempt to create a visual narrative as to how a place becomes part of what makes us who we are. A place has an affect on us as much as we do on it.
This work is a self-portrait of the artist as a child, lost in the rainforest.
A Certain Slant of Light
My artistic expression is deeply rooted in the exploration of the human experience within the enchanting landscapes of Australia. Through my work I seek to evoke a sense of mystery, introspection, and connection to the natural world. In this particular piece, I portray a girl lost amidst the Australian landscape, surrounded by fallen leaves, towering eucalyptyus trees, vibrant red toadstools, and a palette of green and ochre colours.
Saltwater
Saltwater represents the way in which we take a picturesque seaside location and turn it into a resort. This painting acknowledges the beginning of the place and the connection to the Aboriginal population
Lost and Found in Wombat Gully
View from my studio of Wombat Gully. The inclusion of the child references historical depictions of children lost in the Australian bush. The child in my painting is metaphorically ‘lost’, playing in the gully. I attempted to capture the unique perspective and the subtle colours juxtaposed against the soft light.
